Sex and the City
Sex and the City was one of the most successful and
acclaimed by both the public and critics. Sex and the City was aired
from 1998 to 2004, being based on the book of the same name written
by American author Candace Bushnell, making both the book and the program
an international success. One of the most successful sitcoms of our
time, Sex and the City shows the lifestyle and daily life of four women
living in New York, which are all single and in their thirties. The
show focuses primarily on the women’s love lives, also depicting their
professional and social lives, in situations which are common to a woman
in her thirties. Although Sex and the City being a program with many
comic aspects, many times it discussed important issues, in general
referring to the status of women in our current society. Sex and the
City became also famous due to famous quotes that focus on the humorous
aspects of sex.
Narrated by the main character Carrie Bradshaw, which is a columnist
in a city newspaper, each episode of Sex and the City was based on her
train of thought while writing her column. She was recognized as being
literally “the voice” for many American women who closely identified
with the ideas presented in the Sex and the City.
However, Sex and the City also received several critics of depicting
very elitist characters and focusing on the wealthy, whereas others
complain about the show focusing on nothing more than sex itself. Also
the fixation of the Sex and the City characters with penis size was
also highly criticized, with people claiming that such attitude was
more typical of gay men rather than real life women.
Despite such criticism, Sex and the City became one of the most acclaimed
sitcoms of the last decade, receiving several awards and its recent
DVD release ranking among the top sellers in several countries. As Kim
Cattrall (who played Samantha Jones in the show) would describe, Sex
and the City was “a valentine to being single”.
